To Benefit the Company as a Whole

Nintendo recognizes that it is the strength of each employee that underlies Nintendo's competitive edge. We strongly believe that promoting the development of each employee's potential to the fullest is the best way to increase the long-term collective strength of the company, as well as the best path to job satisfaction for the individual.

Nintendo Ideals for Employees

As the entertainment business is always searching for new ideas, Nintendo tries to foster in its employees the traits listed in the Ideals section below in order to achieve the goal of putting smiles on the faces of everyone we touch.

Accordingly, at Nintendo Co., Ltd. we have established and distributed to our employees as their standard of conduct, the Nintendo Code of Conduct based on Nintendo DNA, the core values that represent the essential spirit upon which Nintendo was founded, and the Nintendo Standards of Behavior. Nintendo employees are acutely aware of their responsibilities to society, and follow our codes and standards. Our overseas subsidiaries have also implemented their own codes of conduct, adapted to the laws and regulations of their respective countries.

Nintendo Ideals for Employees

Cultivation of Human Resources

Nintendo greatly emphasizes the cultivation of human resources to assist each employee in achieving these Ideals. For instance, we offer a full range of in-house training programs, including extensive orientation for newly-hired employees and active on-the-job training programs in each department, and our employees regularly have the opportunity to participate in external seminars for career growth.

Nintendo Co., Ltd.'s in-house training provides opportunities for employees to share their awareness of issues beyond departmental boundaries. Through these opportunities, we hope employees will make fresh discoveries and experience personal growth, which will ultimately lead to multifaceted perspectives, and improved communication and leadership skills.

Promoting Employee Development

Nintendo Co., Ltd. considers its two-way evaluation system as an optimal means to promote employee development. The evaluation criteria are communicated to all employees so that they are able to recognize the progression of their development and move towards the Ideals that Nintendo encourages all of its employees to achieve. We also provide the opportunity for individual employees to reflect on their professional behavior and accomplishments through a self-evaluation system prior to the actual evaluations by supervisors. This evaluation system gives each employee the opportunity to discover potential gaps between one's own perception and the supervisor's perception and to set goals for continuing professional development.

Seeking Employees' Input

Nintendo Co., Ltd. endeavors to incorporate the widest possible range of perspectives in the development of its corporate policies. The system we have in place enables employees to submit their ideas and suggestions for improving company policies directly to the decision-makers, and thus has a positive impact on corporate management and employee satisfaction.

Promoting a Diverse Work Environment

Equal Opportunity and Respect for Diversity

Nintendo acknowledges the importance of employing individuals with a wide array of abilities to increase the collective strength of our company. We respect and aim to make full use of the multifaceted talents and strengths of each employee. In addition, our employee assessments are based on merit, which is in line with strict laws governing the fair treatment of employees regardless of their gender, age, nationality, or disability.

Harmony of Work and Family

Realizing the importance and benefits of maintaining a healthy work-life balance,
Nintendo Co., Ltd. makes every effort to promote time management and work efficiency, while affording employees opportunities for career growth and providing support for them to fully exercise their talents.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. also encourages the active pursuit of personal interests beyond the workplace.

To support and encourage our employees who wish to start or expand their families,
Nintendo Co., Ltd. offers employees child care leave. To further promote the balance between work and family, in April 2008, Nintendo Co., Ltd. instituted a reemployment system for employees who had previously resigned in order to provide extended child or family care. We also have other leave systems in place, such as the Nintendo Refresh Leave System, that offers special holidays to employees who have worked a certain number of years, and the Nintendo Annual Paid Holiday Extension System which gives employees the option to extend their periods of accumulated paid holidays if they plan to use them to participate in self-enrichment or community service activities.

Our overseas subsidiaries have also established various leave systems in accordance with the laws, regulations, and customary practices of their respective regions.

Nina Deboy
Does Nintendo promote a balance between employees' personal and professional lives?
Nintendo and my department gave me great support during my pregnancy.
I was allowed to visit my doctor at any time, even during working hours. After consulting with my manager, I had the chance to determine the length of my parental leave for as long as I wanted it to be within the next three years. My decision is to return after six months, and after that I will work 30 hours per week with the opportunity to adjust the working times based on my needs as a parent. I was also informed in advance of which tasks I will be given in the future; therefore, I am happy and proud to work for Nintendo of Europe.

Promoting a Safe and Healthy Work Environment

Because both physical and mental well-being are essential to employee work satisfaction and skill development, Nintendo has implemented measures aimed at promoting employee well-being.

Physical and Mental Well-being

To support employee health, Nintendo Co., Ltd. provides a health consultation room staffed by an occupational health physician, and encourages employees to take advantage of this service to discuss any concerns they may have about their physical or mental health.

In addition to personal consultations with the occupational health physician, we have incorporated a mental health support system into the Nintendo structure. This system consists of self-care support, training and education for supervisory staff to improve their ability to provide support for individual employees, and external counseling services.

Each overseas subsidiary has also developed support systems aimed at improving the well-being of its employees.

Protecting Safety and Health in the Workplace

At Nintendo Co., Ltd., representatives of the Health Committee, who serve at our headquarters and branch offices, and representatives of the Safety and Health Committee, who serve at our plants, actively engage in efforts to ensure health and safety. In addition to routine in-house inspections, these dedicated employees organize educational activities and projects designed to improve the results of health checks, and work to create and display safety and health notices inside the company. Committee representatives also provide seminars to equip employees with helpful knowledge about mental health and organize workshops on the use of life-saving devices such as the AED*1 taught by fire department staff.

Aiming to Improve Health Check Results

Nintendo Co., Ltd. sponsored two programs in July 2008, the "Employee Health Declaration" and the "Are you healthy today?" campaign, to increase employee awareness about health management and improve their health check results. The "Employee Health Declaration" involved a total of 222 employees who responded to the call to share their declarations of health companywide on the intranet. This program was a great success because it made employees more conscious about monitoring their health and encouraged interactive and open discussion, which we believe contributed to the heightened employee awareness about steps they can take to maintain their health.

The "Are you healthy today?" campaign encourages employees to visit Nintendo's occupational health physician to record their weight and waist measurement over a period of six months. Four employees, who wanted to be healthier, were invited to participate in this project. They reported their weight loss at periodic intervals on the intranet: at the beginning, after three months, and at the end of the project. Some have even continued to report their progress. This campaign benefited not only the participants who tried to lose weight, but also other employees who observed the project and were able to learn from it.

Enjoying a Walking Challenge

The Nintendo of America Wellness Program is committed to promoting a company culture which provides all employees and their families with knowledge, resources, and activities to improve all aspects of their health and well-being.

During fiscal year 2008, employees participated in the "Step up to the Plate" walking challenge that involved 112 employees from all Nintendo of America's locations. The challenge was tied to the release of the Wii game Mario Super Sluggers, in which teams of four employees wore pedometers to track the number of steps taken, with a homerun being scored for every 10,000 steps. The teams with the most runs advanced to the playoffs, and ultimately the championship round. All participants were able to promote good health while enjoying the challenge.

What does Nintendo do to promote employee well-being?
Nintendo Co., Ltd. works in close cooperation with its occupational health physicians to provide a health support system that encourages employees to feel comfortable about seeking medical care whenever they need it. This system gives our employees added assurance that they work for a company that cares. Believing strongly that the most effective health management is based on increased employee awareness, Nintendo makes it a priority to offer activities that help employees recognize and reduce stress, in addition to offering awareness-raising promotions such as our "Are you healthy today?" campaign and our "Employee Health Declaration," which encourage employees to consider and evaluate their lifestyles. Nintendo continues its commitment to improve the work environment through a variety of approaches with the aim of ensuring that employees are able to enjoy good health throughout their careers.
