Nintendo’s human resources approach

Nintendo’s management policy

As an entertainment company that creates smiles, we aim to offer our unique and original brand of play that anyone and everyone can intuitively enjoy. To enable unique entertainment experiences, we place our dedicated video game platform business – integrating both hardware and software – at the center of everything we do. We understand that all entertainment eventually loses its appeal, so we continually work to provide new and original products and services for people everywhere to make them smile.

Working to provide products that create smiles around the world

The talent required to produce and deliver unique products and services cannot be measured in numbers. Because of this, we focus on Nintendo DNA, which consists of originality, flexibility and sincerity. Using Nintendo DNA as a foundation, we have introduced a variety of human resource initiatives designed to maximize the personal development of each employee through their work experience. The process of creating games or other forms of entertainment and delivering those products or services around the world is a team effort. We emphasize teamwork and cultivate an environment that empowers employees to demonstrate their Nintendo DNA and work with enthusiasm.

Nintendo DNA

Originality
Nintendo's purpose is to continue delivering new entertainment and unique experiences. We place great value on providing consumers with original products and services that surprise them by being different. We are passionate about this goal and will continue to take on new challenges.
Flexibility
In order to sustain prosperity, we must respond dynamically to an ever-changing environment. Our decisions change when the conditions and business environment change. We must be nimble and flexible to adapt to changes by thinking outside the box and not simply follow what has worked in the past.
Sincerity
The accumulation of small but trustworthy actions over time can lead to great change. We need humility and must never forget to be modest, and always put our best foot forward. In order to develop, we try to learn from our experiences each day.

Individual development

In order to keep creating an unprecedented level of fun, we (a) cultivate individuals who act independently as active participants, (b) continue to challenge themselves while flexibly handling change, and (c) are able to gain understanding from and empathize with colleagues. Each person can learn a great deal from their work experiences. Based on this belief, we will help our employees grow through the accumulation of experiences working with their seniors, supervisors, colleagues and team members, in addition to the development of their individual skills.

Teamwork

We believe that the essence of creating an unprecedented level of fun lies in providing a work environment where team members can exchange their ideas and opinions through discussions and receive timely advice from their supervisors. To enable employees to closely collaborate, pooling their strengths and valuing these relationships, we encourage active communication and better coordination in the company. In addition, we have introduced a system to remove any constraints that might hinder individuals from attaining their full potential. Leaders play an important role in teamworking – a team guided by a trusted leader collaborates better. With this in mind, in addition to delivering results, leaders at Nintendo are expected to take an active interest in their team members and support them.

The following outlines initiatives at Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Japan)

Setting and presenting Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Japan)’s own evaluation metrics

We make use of personnel evaluations as a good opportunity for talent development. We show employees the direction to develop their skills by sharing our original evaluation metrics, which were created as guidance toward the Nintendo Co., Ltd. ideals for employees.

Establishing the evaluation system

Employees have the opportunity to self-evaluate their specific performance based on their work attitude and task achievements before being evaluated by their managers. Understanding any gap between the self-evaluation and manager feedback provides an opportunity for skill development.

Providing internal training

We provide training on specific topics. In addition to education that focuses on the responsibilities of individual departments, we offer employees opportunities to attend external seminars where necessary.
Workplaces that support diversity

Flexible workstyles

We strive to provide an environment for employees to demonstrate their abilities to the fullest by enhancing programs for supporting flexible workstyles, such as by allowing employees to work flexible hours. We also encourage employees to make use of those programs.

Fair employment and respect for individuality

We respect human rights and recruit people regardless of factors such as gender, age, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and the like. We work to provide a workplace where all employees can demonstrate their abilities and respect each other.

Promoting women's careers

We hire and appoint people regardless of their gender. To establish an environment where female employees can fully demonstrate their ability, we have introduced various systems.
Framework for encouraging collaboration

Policy on office attendance

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Japan), in principle, requires its employees to come to the office for work. We believe that having meaningful face-to-face communication is both an effective way to create original products that leverage the collective strength of employees and to achieve growth as individuals. We have established an environment where employees can physically meet every day and develop close relationships.

Internal website for self-introductions

To further encourage communication between our employees, we have set up a self-introduction page as part of our internal communication portal. Employees can edit and publish their own profile to share their work experience, interests and other things about themselves with colleagues, which helps facilitate smoother communication between employees on work matters.
