100 years ago
In pursuit of turf
Judd: Squids win
The birth of something big

Sea levels continued to rise as both the Inklings and Octarians moved onto land.

The growing scarcity of surface turned their relations sour, and the Great Turf War broke out between the two sides.

The initial clash was won by the Octarians due to the easygoing Inklings not wanting to get up early in the morning. The Octarians also had their Great Octoweapons, which helped them maintain their technological superiority.

But the tides were turned when an Octarian cord was accidentally unplugged and the Inklings were able to launch a counterattack. A youthful Cap'n Cuttlefish was leader of the Squidbeak Splatoon, which served on the Inkling side of the war.

The Great Turf War culminated with an Inkling rally and victory. The defeated Octarians were forced to retreat to the underground domes in Octo Valley. The verdict for the war was provided by Judd.

The birth of the Great Zapfish followed the Great Turf War. This creature would become indispensable as an energy source for everyday life.

Agent 3

SUrprisingly responsible

Inklings are squids that can transform into a humanoid form. Their instinctual desire for attention and urge to ink their territory can be seen in their Turf War behavior. While it does depend on the individual, Inklings generally become able to transform around age 14, and so that's about when they begin engaging in Turf War battles.

Inklings are a species of squid that can change into a humanoid form. Many Inklings look up to the two individuals who seem to be particularly flourishing in the Inkopolis life. Many others, however, just want to have fun.

Inklings, squid that can transform into a humanoid form. Many squid seem to look up to two individuals who are particularly flourishing in Inkopolis life. Still, squid will be squid, and there's plenty of them who just want to have fun.

Agent 8

In the groove

A young Octoling brought to the Deepsea Metro by Kamabo Co. as an experiment. Originally a combatant, they were named "Number 10,008" by Kamabo Co., but Cap'n Cuttlefish fondly gave them the name "Agent 8" instead.

Annie

Loves subculture

Employee at Cooler Heads, a popular shop in Inkopolis. Also runs an online store called SplatNet Gear Shop. Has a shy, withdrawn personality and loves metal music. A clownfish named Moe lives in her hair.

Bisk

Chill crab

Runs Shella Fresh, the shoe store in Inkopolis Square. He has a mature vibe and is content to roll with whatever life throws his way. He likes shoes, and he loves wearing his three favorite pairs all at once.

C.Q. Cumber

Everything operating as it should

Not only operates the Deepsea Metro, but also monitors the trials at each station. Dispenses various pieces of advice to test subjects trying to reach the "promised land." Even after Kamabo Co.'s disappearance, he continues to maintain punctual service for those living in the deep sea.

Callie

Adorably naive

The more innocent and carefree of the Squid Sisters pop duo. Her cousin and partner, Marie, is always there for her when she needs a helping hand. Callie loves the outdoors and never seems to get tired. That boundless energy and curiosity sometimes leads her into trouble though.

Craymond

Conscientious crustacean

A shrimp that lives atop the head of Flow, the clerk at the hat store Headspace. It might look like he's the one always looking out for Flow, but really he needs her as much as she does him. Ever thoughtful, Craymond is careful to maintain a polite tone at all times.

Crusty

Crispy cool

A shrimp who dresses to look like crispy fried food. He was hired to manage Shrimp Kicks in Inkopolis's shopping center, Booyah Base, but later struck out on his own. He now runs a food truck, the Crust Bucket, in fashionable Inkopolis Square. He's always in an energetic mood as he works.

Cuttlefish

Used to be a true force

A living witness to the Great Turf War, he once stood on the front lines in the battle against the Octarians. Also the grandfather of the Squid Sisters. Said to be over a hundred years old.

DJ Octavio

The big bad boss

The leader of the Octarian army engaged in a life-or-death battle with the Inklings. Uses Great Octoweapons to repeatedly invade the squid world. An indomitable Octarian that will always get back up and fight, no matter how many times he's defeated. Unique for his use of wasabi in DJing.

Flow

Loves to laugh

A mysterious lady working at the hat store Headspace in Inkopolis Square. She's a big fan of food, drink, and anyone she considers cute. Her age is unknown, but she seems to be older than most of her customers. Craymond lives on top of her head.

Iso Padre

Poet

A giant isopod who can always be found riding around the Deepsea Metro. He might look intimidating, but he's a true gentleman. He says the bag next to him contains "hopes and dreams." Wants to ride up to Inkopolis someday.

Jelfonzo

Aristocratic jellyfish

Owner of Ye Olde Cloth Shoppe in Inkopolis Square. A bowtie-and-hat combo is his trademark look. He learned how to speak to Inklings using an ancient scroll, which is why he has such an old-timey way of speaking.

Jelonzo

Fashionista

A clerk at Jelly Fresh, a specialty clothing shop in Booyah Base, Inkopolis, which attracts the fashion-obsessed Inklings. Most jellyfish don't speak squid, but Jelonzo has been studying on his own and can get by. His textbooks are a little antiquated, and his speech can reflect that.

Judd

Superior lifeform

A mysterious cat living leisurely in busy Inkopolis and Inkopolis Square. He's got a keen eye for judging Turf War outcomes and is able to do so instantly. He used to be the only mammal in this world but was later joined in that category by Li'l Judd.

Li'l Judd

Unusual lifeform

One of two mammals in this world. He sits on Judd's belly while Judd sleeps at the foot of Deca Tower in busy Inkopolis Square, but he's not particularly attached to him. Aiming for Judd's seat, he's often plotting to get him out of the picture, but his small size has prevented him from acting on said plans.

Marie

Dancing to her own beat

A member of the pop group the Squid Sisters. She has unique tastes when it comes to names and takes things at her own pace. She's always thoughtful toward her cousin and bandmate, Callie. She doesn't handle excessive air conditioning or heating very well.

Marina

Real sweetheart

One half of Off the Hook, another pop duo with a unique sound. Absolutely adores and looks up to Pearl. Has top-notch DJ skills, but also an incredible singing voice. Major fan of the Squid Sisters.

Moe

Coarse speech

Clownfish living in Annie's hair and working part-time at a popular headgear shop in Inkopolis. He has a sharp tongue and is often rude to those who visit the shop. But he always remains hidden, never coming out from Annie's hair. In this regard, he's quite similar to the shy Annie.

Mr. Grizz

Nobody knows his true form...

A mysterious entity who may or may not actually exist. Appears to be in charge of Grizzco, which hires for part-time jobs where employees splat incoming Salmonids. However, no one has actually seen him. They've only ever heard his voice emanating from a wooden bear carving.

Murch

Growth spurt

A kid who's set up shop in Inkopolis Square, offering the chance to change gear abilities. Building off Spyke's teachings, he's created his own unique style of business.

Octarian

Diligent

An inhabitant of the underground octopus world, also called the Octarian world. Used to live aboveground, but moved underground after being defeated in the Great Turf War that took place when the sea levels rose. Diligently works to systematically keep the Octarians in line using music.

Pearl

I've got what it takes!

One half of Off the Hook, another pop duo with a unique sound. Her voice truly is almost too much for one person, having the capability to decimate all if used at full power. After meeting Marina, though, she successfully learned how to control it. Her talent has blossomed, and she's now at the top of the rap game.

Salmonids

Bon appétit!

Salmon that can live both underwater and on land. Multiple types have been discovered. They go out clad in cookware, hoping to be cooked in a delicious way, and they swim upstream to where they were spawned. They're also adept at weaponizing junk found in the sea.

Sheldon

Knows his weapon

The owner of weapon shop, Ammo Knights. The original store, found in busy Inkopolis's Booyah Base, has been in operation since his grandfather's generation. He later opened a second location in the fashionable shopping center of Galleria, Inkopolis Square. He lives to manufacture and remodel weaponry.

Spyke

Enterprising entrepreneur

A sea urchin doing shady business in a back alley of busy Inkopolis. It's said he made over a hundred million in cash. Lately he's handed the business off to Murch and can be found on his laptop at fashionable Inkopolis Square cafés, working to keep the goods flowing and the profits moving in the right direction.

Telephone

Talks about the "promised land"

A retro telephone installed on one of the platforms in Deepsea Metro's Central Station. Visitors are encouraged to complete missions at each metro station and collect the four thangs so that they may reach the "promised land."
